Mouse
Well, we caught a mouse in one of the two traps we set last night. It was terrible, it’s bad when they don’t snap the neck. The trap came down on the back of the mouse, breaking it’s back but leaving it very much alive… and screaming.
We waited a few moments to see if it would die from it’s injuries and realized it might suffer for some time. Then came the dilemna of how to finish it off and put the poor thing out of it’s misery. The kindest kill would have been decapitation or crushing it’s skull. Fastest and most humane, but entirely too grizzly. Instead I suggested drowning, and Wolfe submersed it in the sink. It was sad. I didn’t watch any of it, poor Wolfe was saddled with it. I’ll take the next mouse on. I saw another one shortly after the first one was killed, so I know we have a problem. I wish we could just let them be, but I know it’s not an option. I’ve heard stories from people who didn’t want to hurt them, and end up with mice everywhere within a few months. I wish the no-kill traps were more effective. Someone really does need to design a better mouse trap. At least from what I hear of drowning it’s one of the more pleasant ways to die after the initial horror of the lungs filling with water. It’s supposed to get all dreamy, and pleasant. Hopefully the sensation of life slipping away under the water was one that took away the mouses pain of his broken back and its last few moments were of peace, and not screaming horror. I almost cried. I cried inside.

Instead of traps, try sticky pads. We have had scores of mice running around the house and they seem to work.
